- In the absence of an engine room qualification, Metric level Mathematics and Science is a prerequisite for the trainee program.

Immediate supervisor:
- Barge Engineer
Responsibilities and duties:
- Assisting the barge engineers in the fulfilment of their duties, including but not limited to servicing and repair of main engines & alternators, pumps, sewerage system, safety equipment, fire suppression systems, air conditioning, electrical switchgear, hydraulic & pneumatic systems, domestic water system.
- Safely and effectively executing specific tasks and duties assigned to him by the Barge Engineer to the best of his / her ability.
- Ensuring that allocated engineering spaces are maintained in a neat and orderly condition at all times. This includes general housekeeping, washing & painting of these areas as required.
- Conduction of daily rounds of all barge engineering spaces to check condition of spaces, fluid levels and operation of barge equipment.
- Maintenance & control of all engineering tools.
- Assist the Barge Master to sign up & sign off customer vessels before & after every bunker delivery.
- Assist the deck crew in times of crew shortage to carry out bunkering and mooring operations.
- Reporting of all potential hazards & risks to the engineer. This includes oil leaks, damaged equipment, unsafe working areas and hazardous working practices.
- Observing and following all safety instructions and procedures
- Observing the company safety and health precautions and those listed in the code of safe working practices for merchant seamen, with particular attention to the procedures for the “entry into enclosed spaces” and hot work permits”.
- Strict observance of the safety procedures as set out in ISGOTT, company manuals and Master’s Instructions.
